Camera

The camera we use for filming is the Sony NX5. This is a semi professional camera and therefore ideal for what we are doing.

Setting up the Camera

1.The first thing that we must do in order to set the equipment up is open the tripod.
2. Attach the camera to the tripod.
3. Balance the bubble.
4. Insert the battery in the camera.

Setting up a Shot

Before filming begins there are a number of procedures that have to be taken in order to get a clear shot.

1. Zoom in on the subject that you wish to film.
2. Focus up on the most detailed part of the subject.
3. White balance.
4. Exposure.
5. Zoom Out.

How is sound and mise-en-scene used to convey meaning in the film Hanna?

In the film "Hanna" sound is constantly being used to build tension and support action sequences.
At the beginning of the scene there is slow non-diegetic (mainly orchestral) music this music stops as Hanna is of screen.

Then there is a short period of time where Hanna (who is between the age of14 and 16) shows a moment of vulnerability that leads to the audience siding with her.

Towards the end of the action sequence you can hear Hanna taking quick heavy breaths which adds to the tension that is being built.

Non-diegetic sound effects like gunshots and the sound of someone being stabbed are very commonly used throughout the thriller genre, to reinforce the action on screen.

Sound Garden 197 - Analysis

The scene is instantly set through darkness and a sense of secrecy. The characters are only lighten by a key light which is used to create a dark and in some cases sinister atmosphere. As soon as the camera passes around the room and shows the American flag surrounded by monitors and screens displaying a map of the world in the background the genre of the film is clear.
Most thrillers are set in the USA or involve the American government and other governments and serious people.
The next shot is of a government official being given a “top secret” document, this is typical in the Thriller genre.
There is no music at the beginning which ads to the tension because music often indicates what will happen next in the film, not having music is unusual.
The narrative is made clear relatively early in the trailer and it is easy to pick up what the story is roughly about.
Sound Garden 197 is about terrorism, war and betrayal.
As soon as “Sound Garden 197” is said the action starts and one of the characters is shot, action and violence is not uncommon in the thriller genre.
The scene then changes to a short chase that ends with a “double agent” being shot and killed. Shooting and chases are very common in the thriller genre.
The key effect used in Sound Garden 197 that makes it a thriller apart from the obvious story is the minimum amount of lighting throughout the film. All of the characters are constantly in some sort of shadow which conceals their identity in a way that somehow suggests that they don’t want to be seen or recognized.
